How it works

Your rules.
Your view.

Tell MuteThis what you would rather avoid. Choose where it runs. Keep the option to reveal an item whenever you want.

Get Mute This

New to MuteThis? Install the Chrome extension. Connect an account to use AI topic rules. Open the setup guide ↗

  1. Choose your rules.

Add a topic, or a word or phrase you want to avoid. Start with something specific, like “celebrity gossip,” and save your rule.

Topic rules use your account’s AI checks and can apply to text, images or both. Word and phrase rules match text locally in this browser, without an account or AI checks. They do not check images. You can edit a rule, switch it off or remove it as your preferences change.

A personal preference. No explanation needed.

  2. Include websites.

In the extension, open Settings → Websites and include the sites you want to filter. Your saved website choices decide where MuteThis checks.

Chrome also needs to allow the extension access to those sites. Website access and your included-site choices are separate; both need to be in place.

Including a website does not start filtering. You turn it on when you are ready.

  3. Start filtering.

New alpha installations start paused. Save a rule and include a website, then choose Start filtering when setup is ready. AI topic rules also need a connected account and available AI checks.

For AI topic rules, supported text and still images are covered while they are checked. Content cleared by your rules becomes visible. Matching or uncertain content stays covered.

One page can use many checks. See pricing and included checks ↗

  4. The next choice is yours.

Open a covered item’s Item actions menu. Choose Details to read the available explanation while it stays covered, or Reveal to see that item. Cover again hides it again.

Revealing an item does not change your rule. You can also edit your rules or pause filtering in the extension. Paused browsing is unfiltered.

THE DAILY EDIT
A quiet path through a green woodland

A slower way to spend Sunday

A simple walk can change the tone of your whole day. Without a schedule or a specific goal, it gives you space to notice what’s around you.

It’s an easy way to be more present, right where you are. A different route, a new street, or even a familiar trail can make the ordinary feel a little more interesting.

The Chrome alpha

Know what it covers.

Filtering can make mistakes, and coverage varies by website. MuteThis gives you another way to manage what you encounter, with choices you can change.

Text and still images

The alpha focuses on HTML text and still JPEG, PNG and WebP images. Video, animations, canvas, frames and unusual page layouts are not fully supported. Chrome’s internal pages, the Chrome Web Store and MuteThis account pages are not filtered.

Your content and privacy

For AI checks, selected page text, prepared images and your topic rules are sent through MuteThis to your selected AI provider. Readable content on signed-in pages can contain private information. Local word and phrase matching does not send page content for AI checks.

When something feels off

AI can miss content or cover something you wanted to see. If an item stays covered, open Details or check the extension panel for errors. You can refine a rule and ask us for help.
