Chrome on desktop · Alpha

Make it your space.

Create an account, install MuteThis, then choose what you would rather not see. The alpha is for Google Chrome on a desktop or laptop, not mobile Chrome.

New accounts include 1,000 welcome AI checks to use within 30 days. No card or payment required. This is a one-time allowance, with no automatic renewal.

  1. Create your free account

Use your email and a password, then verify your email for password recovery. Account creation and the welcome allowance do not start a subscription.

  2. Install MuteThis in Chrome

Open the unlisted Store listing and choose Add to Chrome. Review Chrome’s website-access permission prompt, then pin MuteThis from Chrome’s Extensions menu. You install from the Store; you do not need a ZIP or Developer mode. Store updates arrive through Chrome.

The extension needs access to page content to cover and check supported text and still images. Browser settings can restrict site access; MuteThis cannot filter a site where access is denied.

    Open Chrome Web Store
  3. Connect and add your first filter

Click the MuteThis icon and choose Connect account (or Sign in to MuteThis in an older version). Sign in to this account. Check the browser name and any confirmation code shown in both places, then approve the connection.

In the extension’s rules section, describe one topic you want to hide. Review the change and save it to your account. Choose text, images or both. Start with one clear rule; you can edit it later.

Open Settings → Websites and include the sites you want to filter. Chrome’s website-access permission lets MuteThis read a site; your saved website choices decide where it checks. Including a site does not start filtering.

When your saved rule, included website and available checking are ready, choose Start filtering. New alpha installations start paused. Filtering runs on supported pages only when Chrome allows access, the site is included, and global and site filtering are on. After an update, review any setup or permission prompt before enabling.

  4. Check your first page

Open an ordinary public article with text and still images, or reload an already-open page. Supported content is covered while it is checked. Content cleared by your rules becomes visible; matching or uncertain content stays covered. Check the panel for errors if covers remain.

Try another page and newly loaded content as you scroll. Open the item’s Item actions menu (three dots, or a crossed-out eye for content flagged by your rules). Choose Details while the item stays covered, or choose the Reveal action to show it. Open the menu again and choose Cover again to hide it. Grouped reviews can cover acceptable neighboring content. Review depth and sensitivity change how rules are applied; they are not accuracy guarantees.

Chrome’s internal pages, the Chrome Web Store and MuteThis account pages are not filtered. The alpha focuses on HTML text and still JPEG, PNG and WebP images. Video, animations, canvas, frames and unusual page layouts are not fully supported.

For supported content, covers also conceal the covered text and images from Chrome’s accessibility features and keyboard navigation. Revealing an item or pausing filtering restores access. Screen readers and unusual page layouts may behave differently; protection is not guaranteed. The content stays in the page’s source, where page scripts can still access it.

Usage, help and leaving the alpha

What happens when the welcome checks run out?

The allowance ends after 1,000 checks or 30 days. It does not renew automatically. One page can use many checks, and rules or closer reviews can add usage. Open Billing & usage to see your available checks and any plans offered to your account. A purchase is optional; only a confirmed payment can add paid capacity. Returning from checkout alone does not confirm payment.

If checkout is available, review the price, included checks and renewal terms before paying. After returning, check your allowance or choose Check payment status. Do not start another payment while the first is still pending.

What if checks stop or content stays covered?

Read the panel’s message. Capacity waits and provider cooldowns can recover automatically; an exhausted or expired allowance needs attention in your account. Use Refresh after resolving it. Keep uncertain content covered or reveal an individual item yourself. Pause filtering if you want to stop checking; paused browsing is unfiltered.

For help, send the extension version, the visible error and whether text or images were affected through support. Do not send passwords or private page content. Only include information you choose to share in the support form; private page excerpts are not needed to describe a setup problem.

How do I stop, cancel or disconnect?

Pause filtering in the extension to stop checking. Remove a browser’s access under Browsers, or use Disconnect in versions that offer it. Chrome’s Extensions menu can remove the extension. Pause first, or reload open pages after removal to restore their original appearance.

Disconnecting, pausing or uninstalling does not cancel a subscription. Use Billing & usage → Manage subscription to review cancellation and its effective date. Use Account for sign-out, recovery and account deletion.
